This intensive one-credit workshop examines the relationship between art and journalism with a
strong emphasis on photography. The centerpiece of the workshop will be interacting with and
participating in an exhibition at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art called
Dispatches. This exhibition gathers artistic responses to the news by 34 contemporary artists
and photojournalists. Dispatches includes work Susannah Sayler and Edward Morris (Sayler /
Morris) of The Canary Lab at Syracuse University, as well as Syracuse University graduate
LaToya Ruby Frazier. Students will engage with the exhibition and blog their responses into a
website that is part of the exhibition itself. The workshop will also include a visit to the Duke
Center for Documentary Studies, vists/talks with other artists and journalists, as well readings, a
film viewing and discussion.
